Updated for Patch 3.23
Axes are melee weapons that are often used by Marauders and Duelists who specialize in Strength-oriented Attack builds with a pinch of Dexterity for a good measure. These are tied to the bottom-left part of a Passive Skill Tree sitting between Maces, which are more Strength-oriented, and Swords, whose users are a bit more Dexterious. Axes are very similar to both of these weapon types, they share a similar pool of modifiers, although Axes are preferable in Bleed builds. Another reason to pick Axes over other weapons is their high base Damage and Attack Speed (they usually don't have Implicit modifiers to balance it out). Axes are in actuality the most popular weapon type for Melee builds.
Axes are used pretty much exclusively in Attack Builds, so their DPS is the most valuable stat no doubt about that. Keep in mind that you can buy a Rare Axe with over 1300 EDPS or 900 Physical DPS on a rather modest budget, and as you will see, none of the Unique Axes come close to that number, making them sub-optimal choices in almost any case. The best general-purpose weapon on this list is probably Atziri's Disfavour, and it's not even that good. Unique Axes are also not particularly *unique*, most of them are rather boring actually. It's hard to find a build-enabling feature on them. These are however excellent for leveling - we recommend using most of the low-level Unique Axes up to character level 70 or so. The list we've put together should prompt you to explore the potential of all of these weapons or explain how they work and why some builds use them.
One Hand Axes | |
The Screaming Eagle - You can select it as your starting weapon, it has okay DPS and a 10% bonus to your Movement Speed which comes in handy if your damage is high already.
Required Level: 6 Socketed Gems are supported by Level 2 Chance to Flee |
|
Dreadarc - It's another leveling weapon, one that will suit a Fire Damage Skill such as Molten Strike as the Curse-on-Hit is a really good QoL feature, but it can be also wielded by an Animated Guardian if you play a Fire-oriented Minion build to apply Flammability on Hit.
Required Level: 16 Adds (5-15) to (20-25) Physical Damage |
|
Relentless Fury - It can compete with some Rare Weapons for a spot as a leveling gear piece mostly because of the Life Leech, Culling Strike, and Onslaught. It's not used in any proper build as all of these features are easy to obtain by other means.
Required Level: 29 (60-80)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Moonbender's Wing - Its DPS here seems low, but the Cold Damage bonus sourced from Physical Damage makes it quite bearable for a low-level Physical-to-Elemental build like Glacial Hammer, Lightning Strike, or Frost Blades. The Lightning Warp on Hit has a 1-second Cooldown and after getting used to it, the weapon will make you progress through the Acts a bit faster.
Required Level: 39 Trigger Level 15 Lightning Warp on Hit with this Weapon |
|
Soul Taker - Its DPS is mediocre, too low to make it usable in a proper build. It's still quite decent because your Mana sustain will no longer be an issue, which is still rarely a concern. The weapon is so valued not on account of its power, but because it's a component required to create a Kingmaker.
Required Level: 59 (140-180)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Actum - It's bad, a Rare Axe is better in any case. Actum completely removes Intelligence which restricts you from using a lot of Skills and Items. It fixes your Crit Chance at up to 30%, so it's bad for any Critical Strike build. Its DPS is also low.
Required Level: 63 Has no Sockets |
|
Jack, the Axe - This weapon can sometimes be used in Melee Bleed builds like Lacerate of Haemorrhage which requires an Axe or Sword. It has low DPS, but the +35% increased DoT Multiplier (higher than a Rare T1 Prefix) and 20% more Damage with Bleeding from Thirst of Blood (which also grants a solid Life Regeneration bonus) make it surprisingly strong. It still has to compete with a Rare weapon with increased Damage with Bleeding or Elder's DoT Multiplier for Bleeding Prefix, but only a very expensive one will outcompete it.
Required Level: 65 Grants Level 20 Thirst for Blood Skill |
|
Rigwald's Savagery - It has a great synergy with a Sword in your other hand, especially Rigwald's Command if you play a Bleed build. The 25 to Maximum Rage is good, but a Rare Psychotic Axe will probably be better even in a build that values Maximum Rage.
Required Level: 67 Adds (50-70) to (135-165) Physical Damage |
|
Dyadus - It's bad. For an Elemental Damage Attack build, we recommend a Rare weapon with added Elemental Damage instead - one or two such high-tier Prefixes with a Suffix for increased Attack Speed should be comparable in terms of DPS.
Required Level: 69 Adds (255-285) to (300-330) Fire Damage in Main Hand |
Two Hand Axes | |
Limbsplit - It's a fine leveling weapon for most Melee Attack builds on account of its high damage and Culling Strike.
Required Level: 13 +1 to Level of Socketed Strength Gems |
|
Wideswing - It's another good leveling weapon that you can start wielding at level 18. There's not much to it, just a lot of damage, Range, Accuracy, and a bit of Mana on Kill.
Required Level: 18 Socketed Gems are Supported by Level 20 Increased Area of Effect |
|
Reaper's Pursuit - Yet another leveling weapon with good damage and minor boons to smooth out the process.
Required Level: 33 (100-125)% increased Physical Damage |
|
The Harvest - It increases your Crit Chance which would make it around 10% at the time you're able to wear this weapon with no other additions. With a Diamond Flask, Assassin's Mark, Power Charges, and a few passives, you can quickly reach a considerable Crit Chance very early on to pair it up with Maligaro's Virtuosity Gloves for a big damage boost. The Harvest has no use in the late game.
Required Level: 37 (120-140)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Replica Harvest - Instead of Flask Charges on Critical Strikes, it grants the Elusive buff that increases your Movement Speed and Chance to Avoid Damage from Hits. It's as good as the original for leveling, even more so if you don't have leveling Flasks.
Required Level: 37 (120-140)% increased Physical Damage |
|
The Blood Reaper - It's another leveling Axe with great DPS and utilities such as Reduced Mana Cost of Skills, tons of Maximum Life, some Life Regeneration, Life Leech, and Chance to cause Bleeding which is a small DPS boost for any purely Physical build.
Required Level: 45 (180-200)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Ngamahu's Flame - A weapon with a built-in Trigger Skill that has a chance to proc on each Melee Hit. You can build a whole character around this mechanic as we did in Ngamahu's Flame Cyclone Chieftain. It's not really good in regular Melee Fire Damage builds as the DPS present on it is low, even with the major boost to Fire Penetration you'd be better off with a Rare Weapon. It's still great for leveling with Fire Attacks like Molten Strike or Volcanic Fissure.
Required Level: 55 20% chance to Trigger Level 16 Molten Burst on Melee Hit |
|
Kaom's Primacy - A low-DPS Axe that enhances your Rage gain, but it's not a thing to be particularly concerned about - you can gain a lot of Rage from an Axe mastery, War Bringer, or any Rare Gloves. The extra Fire Damage is substantial on Physical-to-Fire Conversion builds, but still, too low to justify its usage.
Required Level: 58 (100-140)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Wings of Entropy - A very interesting weapon that treats you as if you're dual-wielding it, despite being a 2-hand weapon. You can benefit from both (2-hand and dual-wielding) modifiers now, and you get the +15% Block Chance with 10% more Attack Speed bonuses. Its DPS is laughably low so it's not used in any proper build that we know of.
Required Level: 62 (7-10)% Chance to Block Spell Damage |
|
Replica Wings of Entropy - It's similar to the original, but instead of Added Elemental Damage, it grants you more Attack Speed or Crit Chance. Attacks will be performed in sequence with this weapon so you'll benefit only from one bonus at a time. It's sometimes used in Splitting Steel builds as they source a lot of their flat Physical Damage from the Impale effect boosted by Champion's Master of Metal.
Required Level: 62 (7-10)% Chance to Block Spell Damage |
|
Sinvicta's Mettle - It's a bad/mediocre weapon that grants you Rampage. It's a mechanic that increases your Damage and Movement Speed as long as you can kill enemies fast enough. Most players will use Shadows and Dust Gloves or Bisco's Leash Belt to get it, with a good weapon instead.
Required Level: 62 (140-152)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Atziri's Disfavour - It's a weapon that was considered great back when it was first introduced, but over time it got slowly pushed out of the meta by other Rare and Unique weapons. It has decent damage, but its most prominent feature is the +30% Quality of Socketed Support Gems which is a lot. You can use it if this Quality is of particular importance, as is the case in this Vengeance Slayer Build.
Required Level: 64 25% chance to Maim on Hit |
|
Hezmana's Bloodlust - There's no point in using this weapon, it has low DPS and a conditional Attack Speed bonus that is hard to activate in a controlled manner.
Required Level: 64 25% chance to Maim on Hit |
|
Uul-Netol's Kiss - The Attack Speed here is low, but if you rely on a slow-hitting Exerted Attack with Fist of War Support Gem and Echoes of Creation Helmet it can be acceptable as a temporary budget option. Most of such builds will however use a Rare Weapon or the Marohi Erqi, so it's hard to find any use for it.
Required Level: 64 25% chance to Maim on Hit |
|
Uul-Netol's Embrace - We tried to create a Bone Nova build but it's simply too inefficient and a downright terrible idea. Bone Nova is a Projectile Attack much like Physical Frost Blades, but weaker, mostly due to the lower Damage and 0.5-second Cooldown.
Required Level: 64 25% chance to Maim on Hit |
|
Debeon's Dirge - It's not good simply due to its low DPS with little to no extra features that you can expand on. Just get a Rare Weapon.
Required Level: 66 Adds (310-350) to (460-500) Cold Damage |
|
Kingmaker - Kingmaker is one of the most valuable weapons in the game as a lot of Minion players that employ Animated Guardian (which is most of them) equip him with it for the various bonuses that apply to its Allies, which includes all your Minions and your character. It's especially good in a Crit Minion build such as this Absolution Summoner Necromancer. You can learn more about AG's weapons here.
Required Level: 66 (300-360)% increased Physical Damage |
|
Kitava's Feast - It's yet another bad weapon that has little to no unique aspects about it and low DPS. Leech and Life on Kill are some of the easiest to acquire stats, often from the Passive Skill Tree. If you want to destroy corpses, allocate the specific Axe Mastery.
Required Level: 68 Socketed Gems are supported by Level 30 Melee Splash |
